Paul Calland
- Managing Director

I originally qualified as a technical Illustrator / airbrush artist and worked on Rolls Royce Challenger Tank engines amongst others. I have worked in the Netherlands, the USA then Leeds City centre before moving to the Lakes. Over the years as a New Digital Technology and Prepress Specialist I setup 4 successful businesses which grew and evolved into Cypher as it is today. My outside interests are TVR sportscars – I have owned my 5 litre Griffith for 5 years now after selling a Cerbera which was too fast! I have been a TVR Car Club member since the late 1980’s, and as webmaster won an award for best large car club website for them. I am also an Operational Team Leader and Director of Bay Search and Rescue, a Hagglund all terrain emergency vehicle driver and training to be an airboat pilot when not spending time with my family!

Sue Calland
- Director

I was born in Connecticut USA and with my parents lived in various places in America, including an Indian reservation in the bottom of the Grand Canyon, before returning to the UK when I was 7. I originally trained as a dental nurse before moving into retail art and graphic supplies where I managed busy shops in Harrogate and eventually Kendal. Paul and I then started Cypher in 1995 and in the early years as well as setting up the business I developed my financial skills working in the cash office at a major supermarket. Outside work I enjoy cooking (specifically Mexican food!), reading, the odd rumble through the Lakes and Dales (and to the Le Mans 24Hr) with friends in the TVR Car Club and family time especially camping in my recently acquired trailer tent.

Yn wreiddiol o Gymru, symudais i Cypher yn 2000 i sefydlu yr adran cynllun, wedi if fi treulio y deg blwyddyn cyn yn Llundain. Yna enillais i amryw gwobr yn y diwydiant 'advertising'. Mae fy'n gwallt yn newid i lwyd ac yn adlamu allan sydd yn ewyllus i'r gwaeth galed a datrysiad creadigol. Ond efalle mae hwn oherwydd y longboarding i lawr y mynyddau yn Cumbria!

Originally from Wales, I joined Cypher in 2000 to set up a dedicated design department after spending the previous decade working in the world of advertising in London. I have won numerous awards including 'Ad of the Year' at the British Recruitment Advertising Awards. My ever greying hair and receding hairline being testament to our commitment to hard work and creative solutions. Or maybe it's the longboarding/ skateboarding down the Cumbrian fells that's doing this!

Originally from Scotland I have been in this area now for 20+ years. I have always worked in accounts, mainly running my own department. I have covered a wide range of industry types including Insurance, manufacturing, the Motor Industry and even a Registered Charity prior to starting with Cypher some 9 years ago. My personal interests include animals, travelling and reading.

My first ‘proper’ job since leaving school!
I started in 1999 as a part time admin assistant and have spent time in the majority of the departments in the company over the years. I am currently working full time as Production Manager and have been part of the furniture for 10 years now. I have been lucky enough to live in the Lake District all my life and enjoy walking my dog and swimming out of work...

I have been part of the design team since I graduated in 2004, with a year out somewhere in the middle to travel and live in Australia. Outside of work I love running and have recently completed the Edinburgh marathon in 4 hours 31mins.

Helen Belshaw

I am the longest serving Cypher employee (apart from Paul and Sue!) joining Cypher in June '97. I now juggle working part time with two children - who are currently my hobby/interest/activity at the moment! BC (before children) I enjoyed skiing, swimming and reading the Sunday papers with a coffee!
I am very lucky to live and work in such a beautiful area and enjoy the versatility and range of work at Cypher.

Paul Curwen

I am probably right in saying that not many people would tell a mechanic how to fix a car, or lecture an electrician how to re-wire a house, so why does everyone think they can tell a graphic designer how to design?
I am the young guy of the Cypher team, employed to shake a few of the old boys up and spark them back into life. I have now been at Cypher 2 years and originally went to Staffordshire University, where I achieved a 2.1 in graphic design and a 3 year hangover.

Having joined the Cypher Team in June 2001, I now enjoy the luxury of working part-time to fit in with the 'school run'. Originally qualified as a Dance Teacher I am in charge of all the Cypher theatrical productions - our Pantomime's are second to none!! My passion (if you like) is musical theatre - unfortunately my preferred playlist is banned from the company iTunes list so I keep my toe-tapping to myself.

After spending 3 years at college studying IT I joined Cypher in 2007 as part of their web development team. There’s nothing mundane about this job! Everyday throws up some new challenges due to the varied and diverse websites that we create for our customers.
When I’m not creating websites I enjoy writing my own music and I do a bit of cycling (road & mountain bike) to try and keep fit.
