'Off the shelf' ecommerce systems
The main advantages of an 'off the shelf' software solution is cost, these systems are economical as all the development work has been done already and the cost is shared amongst a wide audience. They also benefit from ongoing development so that as browsers and the internet develops, then you have peace of mind that there will be an upgrade path to ensure your investment in your system is safe. The main disadvantage can be that they will not suit everyones individual requirements. In which case a bespoke solution may be required.

A Bespoke solution would be custom developed solely for the your requirements and you would be actively involved in all aspects of the development, ensuring the look and feel, plus any specific or unique needs to sell your products is exactly as you want it to be. The disadvantage is that this is generally a far more costly excercise due simply to the amount of work required developing a solution from the ground up. It may also require subsequent development work to stay compatible with newer browsers. However the uniqueness of the solution may be exactly what you need to be a leader in your fiedl online.

'entry level' ecommerce
In some cases if you only have a few products or items you wish to sell, or you want to 'have a go' at selling online, then the simplest solution is to add a direct paypal purchase facility on a product by product basis. This is simple and economical to setup and can be easily added to an existing website. All payments are processed and handled securely online by paypal so there are no extra costs or running costs other than their commission per transaction
